“The mass movement of former slaves to the northern states in the early decades of the 20th century was perhaps the most significant demographic event in U.S. history. “The Great Migration” contributed to profound social, economic, and cultural changes in northern cities like Chicago, Cleveland, and Detroit. The black workers arriving in these cities enjoyed economic opportunities that had been denied to them in the South, and the cities themselves flourished for decades alongside their expanding industrial workforces (and newfound tax bases). Ultimately, white flight doomed many of these inner-city economies by shrinking the very tax base that had contributed to their prominence in the first place…” –  Sean Braswell
